The Loss of Predictive Rays (Rashmi Harana): Parashara states that as a planet approaches its deep combustion point, its predictive rays (Rashmi) are progressively stripped away. When a planet is deeply combust, its calculated ray count drops to zero, severely limiting its capability to project auspicious outcomes.

The word Shadbala originates from Sanskrit, where Shad means “six” and Bala means “strength.” Together, it translates to the “Six-Fold Strength” of a planet.

Sthana Bala (Positional Strength): The strength a planet gains based on its position in the zodiac signs, house placements, and divisional charts (like D-1,D-3,D-9). This includes its proximity to its exaltation point.

Out of all six strengths, Sthana Bala is the most important. Think of it as the foundation of a house. A planet can have other types of strength, but if its Sthana Bala is very low, it cannot give you its best results.

When a planet lacks positional strength, it is like a highly talented manager who has no authority, no money, and no office. They have the skill to do great things, but they do not have the power or resources to do their job. Always check Sthana Bala first. If a planet is weak here, its other strengths cannot help it much.

Dig Bala (Directional Strength): The strength a planet receives based on the specific house it occupies. Certain planets thrive in specific directions (e.g., the Sun and Mars are strongest in the 10th house, representing the South, Moon & Ve in the 4th house north,Me & Ju in the 1st house East,Sa in the 7th house west )

Kala Bala (Temporal Strength): The strength derived from the time of birth. It evaluates factors like whether the birth occurred during the day or night, the lunar phase (Paksha), the season, or the year

Chesta Bala (Motional Strength): The power a planet gets based on its speed and movement. Retrograde planets (Vakri) usually score the highest points here.

Naisargika Bala (Natural Strength): The fixed, intrinsic luminosity or natural power of the planet. The order is permanent: the Sun is always the naturally strongest, followed by the Moon, Venus, Jupiter, Mercury, Mars, and Saturn.

Drik Bala (Aspect Strength): The net influence of other planets looking at it. Aspects from benefic planets (like Jupiter) add strength, while aspects from malefic planets subtract strength

Consideration of Planetary Rays (Graha Rashmi)

Rashmi is a technical term in predictive astrology. It literally means a ray or brightness. However, it should not be confused with the physical size or diameter of the planet’s visible disk. Sage Parashara stated that without understanding the concept of planetary rays, it is incredibly difficult to accurately predict results. Therefore, one must first calculate the useful predictive rays of all planets before giving a reading.

Method for Calculating Rays (Rashmi Sadhana)

• When a planet is at its maximum point of debilitation (Param Neech), its ray count is 0. When a planet is at its maximum point of exaltation (Param Uchch), its rays reach their maximum capacity.
• The maximum ray capacity for each planet is as follows:

Sun: 10 Rays
Moon: 9 Rays
Venus: 8 Rays
Jupiter: 7 Rays
Mars / Mercury / Saturn: 5 Rays each

Therefore, when a planet sits somewhere in between its highest exaltation point and lowest debilitation point, its rays are calculated proportionally. To do this, subtract the planet’s exact position (Graha Spashta) from its deep debilitation point, or vice versa (whichever subtraction yields a positive result).

Multiply this difference by the planet’s maximum ray number listed above, and then divide by 6 to get the Medium Rays (Madhya Rashmi).

Rectifying the Rays

To find the final, precise ray value, adjust the Medium Rays according to how comfortable the planet is in its current position:

• Exalted (Uchch): Multiply the rays by 3.
• Moolatrikona Sign: Multiply the rays by 2.
• Own Sign (Swarashi): Multiply the rays by 1.5 (one and a half).
• Great Friend’s Sign (Adhimitra Rashi): Multiply the rays by 4 and then divide by 3.
• Natural Friend’s Sign (Mitra Rashi): Multiply the rays by 6 and then divide by 5.
• Enemy’s Sign (Shatru Rashi): Reduce the rays by half (or treat them as bad/weak rays). If it is a Bitter Enemy’s Sign (Adhishatru), multiply the rays by 2 and then divide by 5.
• Neutral Sign (Sama Rashi): No adjustments or special rules (Samskara) apply; the value remains the same.
• If a planet is moving from its Debilitation point toward its Exaltation point, it is called Urdhvamukha (ascending/forward-facing). If it is moving from its Exaltation point toward its Debilitation point, it is called Adhomukha (descending/downward-facing). Urdhvamukha rays bring great strength and positive fruit, whereas Adhomukha rays are comparatively less powerful.
